Summer 2010 Summer Reading Lists

Click on the link below for the reading list for each grade (1–12) for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Geneva School yearns to see good readers, and reading well requires direction, discipline, and diligence. For nearly ten months of the year, our teachers strive arduously toward the task of teaching mechanics and comprehension, analysis and appreciation. They assign books to be read, questions to be answered, and ideas to be pondered. Reading for understanding begins with the necessity of hard work, but the rewards pay dividends in imagination and inspiration.

The love of reading good books is something we want to see in all our children. Apart from the sheer enjoyment gained from reading there are numerous other benefits.  When children read more than just their classroom assignments, research clearly shows that they generally do well in school. Reading expands a student’s vocabulary and comprehension and leads to better writing skills. Children who read more serious literary works also gain skills in handling complex ideas. The more they read, the more information they pick up. This leads to a solid core of knowledge that is useful across the curriculum.  Besides helping children do well in school, reading also helps them expand their horizons as they learn more about people and the world.

The Geneva School longs to see good readers of best books, but it desires equally to cultivate a love of them. Encourage your children to read. Read with them, and around them, and to them. Remember also, unabridged audio books are widely available in libraries and are great for long road trips.

Keyboarding Skills: The Geneva School recognizes that keyboarding skills are a necessary part of a student’s education. Keyboarding is a skill easily learned at home at the pace of the individual student. There are many interactive software packages available with a proven track record for teaching keyboarding skills.

Since students in 7th grade and up are expected to type essays, etc. and 6th grade students would like the opportunity to do so, the School would like to recommend that students entering these grades who do not have proficient keyboarding skills utilize the summer months to improve in this area.

A software package that has been used by many people for years is Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 17. This software is available for both Mac and Windows machines. (If you have an older computer you will have to order an older version of the software.) It can be purchased from many places including Sam’s Club and Amazon for around $20.
