Digital photography instruction involves two basic elements: the camera and Photoshop, which are taught alongside each other. The course is taught using a hands-on approach; students learn mainly through experience and experimentation with techniques introduced in class. This experience and experimentation can come from a number of sources: class and life experiences and applications, field trips, and outside-of-class shooting assignments. You will often see photography students on campus with camera in hand experimenting with different photographic techniques like shutter speed and light. They will pop water balloons or throw pumpkins off the roof of the building in order to get a vivid picture of them as they burst open. Inside the building they may turn the lights off in a room in order to create “ghosting” effects using a slow shutter speed. Whatever their particular photographic interest may be, students are always encouraged to look at their world through the lens of their camera and see the glory of God’s creation.
