Things that go BOOM! (Grades 4–12)
Let’s face it: one of the best parts about childhood is blowing things up.  Fire crackers in the mail box, eggs in the tail pipe, and bottle rockets in ant beds marked my childhood (and I have a few scars to show for it!).  But nowadays, in the city, the chances for kids to be kids are greatly reduced.  We all know that launching a potato from a gun powered by hair spray over your neighbor’s house is frowned upon.  So send your little pyromaniacs to camp with Mr. Polk.  He has a master’s degree in chemistry, which means basically that he is above average when it comes to determining what should blow up and when.  Plus, he knows to always wear safety goggles.  Students will, in a very controlled environment, build and fire potato guns, catapults, and tennis ball mortars in this action packed week.  They will discuss the chemistry and physics as they go along, but the primary purpose will be good, clean, and safe fun.
Camp Director: Mr. Brian Polk

SAT/NMSQT and ACT Prep: Critical Reading and Writing (Grades 10–12)
Students will learn strategies such as POE (process of elimination), and the “triage” method of approaching the critical reading sections on these tests. Students will also have plenty of practice in writing essays, analyzing, and learning how to improve them. These college entrance tests focus heavily on grammar and usage, therefore students will review a course in basic grammar, with particular emphasis on techniques for “cracking” the tests.

Note to parents of juniors: The PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test. It also gives students the chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. Students take this test at Geneva in October of their Junior year.  In order to give students practice taking the test in test conditions, Geneva’s 9th and 10th grade students also take the PSAT.
