Students at The Geneva School enjoy a variety of opportunities that enable them to explore and develop particular areas of interest or giftedness and to gather socially away from the normal rigors of the academic day.
Informally, upper school students often stay at school after dismissal in order to study together or simply to “hang out” with their friends without the immediate needs of the school day bearing down upon them. It is here that some of the most valuable teacher-student and student-student interaction occurs. This not infrequently extends outside the four walls of the school: to a stargazing party at a faculty member’s house; to class camping trips planned and executed by the students; to informal gatherings around the pool or at one of the local “attractions.”
Formally, Geneva offers a wide array of student-led clubs—the Photography Club, the Drama Club, G-Force (the student booster club), and Pankration (a martial arts club) are just a few examples. Motivated students on occasion start entirely new clubs. For the musically gifted, there is the Repertory Orchestra. In addition, Geneva has an extensive athletic program with 28 teams competing in 15 different sports. We are full members of the FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association) and this year we will compete in the state series (district play) in 13 of our 15 sports.
Students interested in leadership positions may run for an office or seat on one of our two Roundtables: the Rhetoric Roundtable, which leads the high school grades (9–12), and the Dialectic Roundtable, which leads seventh and eighth grades. Roundtable gives students the opportunity to exercise leadership among their peers—in service and in community—and to facilitate effective communication among students and with faculty and administration.
