Fresh Ideas

TGS desires students to have fun and yummy foods, but we ask that bakery cakes, cupcakes, cookies, candy, doughnuts, juice, and soda remain at home. Every family is unique regarding what is a “sweet treat,” so let’s be mindful of what is served to our students in class and bring in foods that are fresh and wholesome.

As you plan for class birthdays, parties, and events, we want to help give some FRESH ideas. TGS values being a place where students can have wholesome and nourishing foods that help them to focus, learn, and grow. We need the parents’ help to bring food for birthdays, class parties, and events that incorporate vegetables, fruits, proteins, and other whole “real” food; these healthy choices provide energy for the school day.

Store-Bought Food Ideas for Your Child’s Birthday

As you plan for your child’s birthday we ask that store-bought cakes, cupcakes, cookies, candy, doughnuts, soda, and juice boxes remain at home. If you are short on time, here are some approved store-bought treat ideas. TGS values providing a place where students can have wholesome and nourishing foods to help them to focus, learn, and grow. You can help by bringing birthday treats that incorporate “real” food that provide energy for the school day. Remember, you can also make a birthday treat from the Fresh Ideas Booklet.

The approved store-bought treats listed in this booklet try to avoid artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, canola and vegetable oils, and artificial flavors. These items can be found at Publix, Target, Walmart, Sprouts, Whole Foods, or Amazon. Check ahead on availability and flavors. Also, inform teachers of treats so teachers are able to ensure families who have children with allergies may provide an alternative.

Every family is unique to what is a “sweet treat,” so let’s be mindful of what is served to our students in class and bring in foods that are fresh and wholesome.

Ideas for Celebrations at Geneva

We love to see parents taking the challenge to help children learn that eating wholesome food and celebrating can happen together. Instead of serving bakery cakes, cupcakes, doughnuts, candy, and soda at class birthdays and parties, which cause blood sugar spikes followed by blood sugar crashes leaving children unable to focus and concentrate, serving healthy and fun food at our class parties helps our students by giving them nutrients that keep them full and fueled for a successful school day and in their after-school, cocurricular pursuits. These Fresh Ideas will hopefully show parents and students that FUN and GOOD-FOR-YOU are a PERFECT PAIR!

Head Lice Information

Animated cartoon of two adult insects carrying luggage, with three small insects following.

Where children are gathered in groups, there may be pediculosis … head lice!  Pediculosis affects all socio-economic and ethnic groups and is not a reflection of poor hygiene. If you discover lice in your home, don’t feel embarrassed or alone! We can work with you to eliminate this nuisance!

Here are two websites that are very informative:  www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/treatmentand www.headlice.org.

Please contact a school nurse, the reception desk, and a teacher (grammar school only) via email or phone to let them know if you have lice at home so that we may take precautions in your child’s classroom to help prevent the spread of lice at school, and so that we can be of assistance to help you rid your child and home of this common childhood nuisance. Your contact with the school will be treated with confidentiality.
