Josef Hageman

Latin and Logic Teacher

Josef Hageman joined the upper school faculty in 2025 and currently teaches eighth grade Latin and seventh grade Logic. He grew up in Montana and graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame having earned his BA in economics and classics, with a concentration in Latin. In college, he studied in Greece and at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. He performed for several years with the Notre Dame Drumline, playing for football and hockey games as well as grade schools and private audiences across the country. During his senior year, he boxed in Notre Dame's Bengal Bouts while raising money for the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh.

After graduating in 2018, Josef became a teacher at Anthem Preparatory School in Phoenix, AZ, where he taught seventh and tenth grade Latin. In 2021, he joined the faculty at Immanuel Lutheran School (ILS) in Alexandria, VA, serving as the eighth grade homeroom teacher while teaching upper school Latin, history, and logic. In the spring of 2024, he accepted an offer to serve as the interim headmaster of ILS for the 2024–2025 school year. That summer, he also earned his diploma and fellowship in Christian apologetics from the International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism & Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, for his introduction and translation of excerpts from a previously untranslated Reformation-era Latin text.

Josef is a practicing Missouri Synod Lutheran and the son of an LCMS pastor. He holds Christian classical education in the highest esteem, and he delights in guiding students to a deeper knowledge of God and his creation, especially through the study of language. In his spare time, Josef can be found working on translations, getting outside for tennis or a run, and composing and recording music.
